“German Brass” is a world-renowned brass ensemble known for its virtuoso performances and innovative interpretations. Founded in 1974, the ensemble initially started as a quintet but later expanded to ten members, incorporating various brass instruments such as trumpets, trombones, French horns, tuba, and occasionally percussion. The ensemble has managed to create "diversity in unity," producing a unique and unmistakable collective sound with ten individualists and renowned soloists from prestigious first-class German orchestras. As an ensemble, they play clear chamber music while also achieving the grandeur and dynamics that only brass instrumentalists can create.
The repertoire of “German Brass” encompasses all stylistic directions and genres from Scheidt to Shostakovich, from Dixieland to Bossa Nova. In their concerts, the ensemble skillfully and joyfully bridges the divide between two musical styles: the programs feature arrangements of classical works as well as adaptations and compositions of timeless pieces, often arranged and created specifically for “German Brass” as a tribute to the ensemble's distinctive sound and technical brilliance.
Members of the ensemble include: Matthias Höfs (trumpet), Uwe Köller (trumpet), Andre Schoch (trumpet), Manuel Mischel (trumpet), Johannes Dengler (French horn), Klaus Wallendorf (French horn), Fritz Winter (trombone and euphonium), Emil Haderer (trombone), Uwe Füssel (bass trombone), Stefan Ambrosius (tuba), Herbert Wachter (percussion).
The artistic director of the festival is Robertas Šervenikas, laureate of the Lithuanian National Prize and conductor.
